Goa was a Portuguese colony until 1961. So its carnival is strongly influenced by its culture.
King Momo is the one who starts the carnival, he receives the keys of the city and for four days all he preaches is "kha, piye aani majja kar" ("eat, drink and make marry"). Presides over the first carnival float.
Usually a fat man or a elder man is chosen to be King Momo.
The city is adorned with colorful ribbons and shiny balls.
It starts on March 2 and ends on March 5, just before Ash wednesday. During those days, the carnival continues even at night.
In Spain there is a proverb that says "el que ha visto Goa no necesita ver Lisboa" ("who has seen Goa does not need to see Lisbon").
